“You can be whatever size you are, and you can be beautiful both inside and out. We’re always told what’s beautiful and what’s not, and that’s not right.” Most women all of ages can relate to this quote especially, myself a young aspiring female sports journalist in 2018. Those wise words stem from Serena Williams one of the greatest tennis players of all time.

Williams has not only dominated the game of tennis, but has also changed the way people view the game. Not only paving the way for young black athletes, but also being an inspiration for girls across the globe. With the platform, Williams has earned over the years, follows the negativity and judgment of people. Unlike her counterparts, Williams has received backlash about her hair and most recently her outfits. This trend to pick apart Williams is getting quite repetitive.

When Williams competed in the 2018 French Open she appeared and competed in
a black bodysuit. The fitted black bodysuit was designed by Nike specifically for Williams. Williams recently had a baby girl named Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. and expressed “ All the moms out there that had a tough pregnancy and have to come back and try to be fierce, in the middle of everything. That's what this represents. You can't beat a catsuit, right” (Tennis Channel). Her efforts to try and become
a figure for new mothers, months later would backfire. In August 2018 the French Tennis Federation President Bernard Guidicelli said Williams and other tennis players need to dress more conservative and have respect for the game and the place being the French Open. Quite ridiculous that attention is so very much focused on an outfit. Is it that Serena has more curves than her other tennis counterparts?

However, is it that authorities in the French Tennis Federation think the attention is being taken off the highly acclaimed French Open and being placed upon Serena instead? It tends to be a double standard when it comes to Serena Williams, since in fact a similar bodysuit was worn by Anna White in the 1985 Wimbledon. Amongst several sports outlet, athletes and fans admire Serena Williams critically acclaimed jumpsuit. On the other hand, President Bernard Guidicelli has stated he has no regret over the ban on Williams’ outfit, although we believe Serena has had the last laugh. Williams turned a negative situation into a positive one by competing in
a flowy tutu. Serena’s character and strength will and always be one to admire.
We here at Overtime U are always rooting for Serena.
